It was really cool learning 3 different technologies in one single project, but my favorite was the 3D printing. I got the idea because I needed a better jewelry storage system. I love funky earrings but I am always losing them!
Once she had decided to make an acrylic jewelry case, she decided to make a pair of earrings for her 3D printed object. She modeled the earrings in Rhino and the printed them in black. Because the design was so small, she used the Projet printer which prints using an acrylic resin that allows for finer detail.
Her inspiration for the design came from her astrology sign: Pisces. The top sphere has an indented wave pattern, and the three teardrops have indented cut outs in the shape of fish. The parts were then printed and assembled using gold wire. Abigail’s positive experience has led her to look into 3D modeling in her current work as well. She is now working with a friend to design more jewelry to Laser Cut and possibly 3D print.
“It was a really rewarding experience using the 3D printing lab and Shawn was so helpful and considerate about contacting me to keep me in the loop. I am very greatful to have the opportunity to use these resources at the school. I love working with 3D modeling, the possibilities are truly endless!”
