Professors rarely have the opportunity to experience a new classroom prior to its construction, making it difficult to test navigation through a room as well as student visibility. Thus, when the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan designed their new classrooms, they contacted the UM3D Lab to help identify potential problems early on. By creating a detailed 3d model of the classroom and showing it in our CAVE system, we were able to provide professors the unique opportunity of experiencing the room before construction had begun. This helped facilitate the design process by allowing professors to comment and make suggestions on the design, and architects to point out flaws not recognized in the blueprints. In addition to providing instant feedback on the overall design and layout of the room, several problems related to navigating through the space were also identified and easily corrected saving the school time and money. As a final step, high quality images were generated of the new classroom for use in presentations and documentation. Project completed by Steffen Heise and Eric Maslowski. |
