VRDent

The Z-Brush Interface
VRDent is the name of a collaborative project between the Dental School and the UM3D Lab, the goal of which is to provide an advanced digital training model for Dental School students. This model would incorporate a 3d display with a haptic feedback device to simulate drilling and other common dental operations.
Eric Maslowski will be demonstrating the lab's progress at the IADR Conference on March 23.
For further information on this ongoing project, please contact Sharon Grayden.
IADR Hands-on Workshop, New Orleans
Using 3D Simulation Models in Education and Research
Global interest is intensifying to use "high-level" virtual reality (VR) routines with haptics (force feedback systems) and 3D modeling for simulation in dental education and research. Needs in dental education are driven by potential efficiency in preclinical training, sophisticated feedback to learners, and accelerated transitions into patient care.
This workshop will provide hands-on opportunities to: (a) see and feel 3D models, (b) use real-time rendering software; and (c) create, manipulate and simulate biologic events and dental procedures focusing on preclinical laboratory procedures for teaching/learning. To eliminate financial barriers to access using these tools, applications use sophisticated but low-cost software, operate on standard tablet PCs, provide web-based options, and do not require complicated training. This workshop offers interested investigators the opportunity to try the technology, connect with the VR project individuals, join the current working group, and help to foster a global research working network (VR "Collaboratory").
The 90-minute workshop is designed to allow participants to "test drive" the application described above. At the conclusion, the workshop participants will be involved in a 30-minute question and answer session about their experiences, ideas, and future roles in the Collaboratory.
Workshop Organizer: Sharon K. Grayden
Workshop Facilitators: Stephen Bayne, Eric Maslowski, Lynn Johnson

Z-Brush
If you have purchased a full copy of the ZBrush software, we recommend you use the scripts we've developed as they greatly simplify the process. We have provided a "Quick Tips" guide and movie (below) to help you get started.
If you are running the trial demo version of ZBrush, you will be able to practice using the model but you won't be able to take full advantage of software or the developed scripts. See the relevant "NoScripts" guide and tutorial movie below. You can download a trial version of ZBrush from the Pixologic website.
