Project Development

One of the University of Michigan 3D Lab's greatest resources is the vast amount of expertise and creativity that exists among the staff. With over 60 years of combined experience in the fields of simulation, digital fabrication, education, visualization, motion capture, digital art, and application development, our globably recognized team can help bring your ideas to fruition. Whether you are looking for ways to better educate through technology, looking for solutions to facilitate your research interests, or have a general idea you want to explore, come and talk with us. We would love to hear from you.

Conceptualization - A large part of the Lab's daily activities include meeting with faculty and students during the preliminary stages of a project creating a development plan or providing resources and guidance into what is possible. There is little that is more satisfying than seeing a rough idea be shaped and molded into a viable, technically sound project. While we at the UM3D Lab surround ourselves with cutting edge technology and push ourselves to become (and remain) experts in our technically oriented fields, we do not blindly force bleeding-edge technology into every situation. We are here to help shape ideas into projects/products that focus on the substance without distracting from the intended research goals with superfulous technology. If we are unable to help you, we often know who else to contact and where to look for you to bring your idea to fruition.

Grant Writing - Often the measurement of an idea's success is the receiving of a local or federal grant award. The UM3D Lab has a long history of being involved in the grant process as well as being instrumental in securing several federal grants. Our proven track record and expert staff serves as a strong argument for technically oriented projects. The UM3D Lab is often heavily involved in the creation of grants that include our services. This can take the form of writing sections, reviewing budgets, or creating detailed development goals for the project. If interested in including the UM3D Lab in your next grant we encourage you to contact us.

General Development - Once an idea has been clearly defined the need to develop the application or assets associated with it becomes a high priority. Depending on the project, and the technology used, this could mean different things. The UM3D Lab's internal core staff can play an integral part in the development of a project to completion but there are times when the projects goals extend beyond resources available or would benefit from student involvement. The UM3D Lab is a large supporter of the academic environment and continuously offer career and skill building opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students. As such, we will often hire, train, and mentor students to not only provide them with critical skills necessary for today's job market but to also give them the opportunity to work on meaningful projects which benefit the research community.
