Lab Access

The University of Michigan 3D Lab is a university-wide service facility. The Lab's hardware and software resources and the support services are available to all students, faculty, and staff at the University of Michigan. Potential external users should contact the UM3D Lab for more information.

A full description of available software can be found here.

Access

Typically, Lab access is provided for the following:

  • Exploratory projects of any kind;
  • Research projects;
  • Feasibility studies in preparation of proposal developments;
  • Student's projects in the context of independent study courses;
  • Student's work required for courses that use the University of Michigan 3D Lab (Lab access will be provided automatically for all students enrolled in the course);
  • Workshops and other UofM events that need the facility.

Access for all users is automatically revoked at the end of every term. The user must resubmit to gain access for the following term, if required.

Application Form

To obtain access to the 3D Lab, download and fill out our Application Form

You can drop this form off at the UM3D Lab. We can be found at room 1365, Duderstadt Center, directly across from CAEN and Groundworks. A hardcopy of the form may also be found in the UM3D Lab.

There is usually a delay of 2-3 business days until your account is activated and card access to the lab granted.

Fees

Our resources are expensive and the cost of running the facility is paid in part from users' contributions. A fee structure is under development and will be published here once it has been finalized and approved. All fees are kept as low as possible and are subsidized by the Office of the Provost. Please contact the UM3D Lab if you need more information.

Fee Waiver

Any member of the UM community (students, faculty, staff) may request a fee exemption. If approved, we will cover the fee through a grant from the Office of the Provost. If you need a fee waiver, please check the appropriate box on the Application Form.
